Deer Island Tour
The
Massachusetts Water Resources Authority operates its sewage waste water
plant on Deer Island just outside of Boston, MA. This incredible
facility handles sewage from 43 member communities at an average daily
flow of approximately 310 million gallons (based on calendar year 2007,
mwra.com). The tour consisted of an entire plant walkthrough discussing
the three stage processing system that turns raw sludge to 99.9% water
before dispersing it 9.5 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. In
addition to the wastewater processing much focus was spent on mechanical
and control systems including pumps of up to 3,500hp and control systems
that simplified field adjustment to the touch of a button.
Special thanks to the
folks at Deer Island, Hugh Kelleher of PHCC, and Leo Reid
for making this possible.
