More than 45 Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy and Graduate Certificates are offered across five engineering departments in traditional disciplines and applied areas of study. PlusOne accelerated master’s degrees are also available for undergraduate students currently enrolled at Northeastern. By involving students in many levels of research, encouraging collaboration across departments, and partnering across the university and with outside institutions and organizations, Northeastern engineering graduate students gain a rich education in their chosen field.

Graduate students can participate in our No. 1 ranked signature cooperative education program, which combines rigorous academics with professional practice giving students up to 8 months of employment in their chosen field. Additionally, an Experiential PhD program provides PhD students opportunities such as internships, fellowships, practicums, LEADERs (combines research and professional skills in industry or public sector) and special initiative programs.

Flexible Programs & Locations
Our master’s programs have electives and concentrations, as well as a thesis option, while some PhD programs have tracks to enable students to focus on areas of most interest to them. An interdisciplinary PhD program is also available.
A Graduate Certificate is another way for students to personalize their path with a specialization in an area of their choice. Over 15 graduate certificates are available. Certificates can be taken in addition to or in combination with a master’s degree, or provide a pathway to a master’s degree in Northeastern’s College of Engineering. Certificates are also available for PhD students. Additionally, master’s programs can be combined with a Gordon Engineering Leadership certificate. Students should consult with their faculty advisor regarding these options.
Program formats include traditional full-time, part-time, on-campus, online, and hybrid options to meet student needs. Programs are offered in Boston, Massachusetts—known for high-tech, biotech, and academia—and some are also offered in innovation regional hubs at our locations in Seattle, Washington, and in Silicon Valley in California.

Li Jiao, PhD’21, chemical engineering, currently working in Affiliated Faculty Sanjeev Mukerjee’s research group, was published in Nature Materials for “Chemical vapour deposition of Fe–N–C oxygen reduction catalysts with full utilization of dense Fe–N4 sites,” developing a model catalyst with scientific breakthroughs and practical significance.
Zach Rogers, a ChE PhD student in the Bencherif Lab, was recently awarded his third Alpha Fund Prototype Grant for his proposal, “Oxygen-controlling cell culture (OCC) systems”.
Computer engineering PhD student Geng Yuan, PhD’23, and ECE Assistant Professor Yanzhi Wang’s research paper on “TinyADC: Peripheral Circuit-aware Weight Pruning Framework for Mixed-signal DNN Accelerators” was nominated for the Best Paper Award at Design Automation and Test Conference in Europe (DATE).
