Engineering Design: Experiential. AI-Infused. Industry-Integrated.
Starting Fall 2027, you can earn a BS in Engineering Design at Northeastern’s Bay Area campus in Oakland, where you will learn by doing the work that professional engineers do.
From your first week, you will work on engineering problems companies actually face, creating, testing, and solving from day one. Hands-on practice will lead your education, and the theory and skills you need are developed as your projects call for them.
Three commitments shape this degree:
- Experiential-first learning puts real projects at the center of your studies.
- Industry-integrated learning means partners bring the problems you tackle, sit in on your design reviews, mentor your teams, and recruit from your class. You will build relationships with working engineers across the Bay Area and complete two co-ops alongside them in the field.
- AI-infused learning builds AI into every course as a working tool, so you finish fluent in the technology reshaping the profession.
A series of hands-on design courses anchors all four years of study, each centered on a real project that grows with your skills and your ambitions. You start by building, and you will finish leading a team on a full design project for an industry sponsor. Along the way, you will choose a concentration in AI, Entrepreneurial Startups, or Human-Centered Engineering. The program is designed to meet ABET accreditation standards, which are the benchmark employers and graduate schools are looking for.
You will graduate with a portfolio of completed engineering projects, a network of industry professionals who know your work, and the experience employers want and need.
To support your experience, limited scholarships are available for students beginning in the second year of the program. Scholarship award amounts vary, and students will have the opportunity to apply during the fall semester of their first year.
