SUMMARY:A Workshop on the NSF GRFP and Other Fellowships
DESCRIPTION:Professor Amal Ahmed will lead a workshop on how and why to apply to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program as well as other fellowship opportunities. The session will also include an interactive panel composed of faculty and staff. Fellowship award recipients (from both Khoury College and the College of Engineering) as well as a representative from the PhD Network will be on hand to share insights on the application process. \nRegister for this event at:  https://events.khoury.northeastern.edu/zRYeN1 \nPanelists: \nAmal Ahmed is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Northeastern University. She received the NSF Career award in 2015 and in 2018 she was the advisor of one NSF GRFP awardee and one who received honorable mention.  Prior to joining Northeastern\, she was an Assistant Professor at the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University (2009-2011)\, a Research Assistant Professor at the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago (2006-2009)\, and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University (2004-2006). She received her PhD from Princeton University in 2004. \nYasmeen Farra is a 3rd year Bioengineering PhD candidate in Dr. Chiara Bellini’s lab. She was awarded the NSF GRFP in 2019.  Her research examines cardiovascular disease associated with inhalation of harmful fine particles from a biomechanical perspective. Beyond the lab she is passionate about effective science communication and the positive influence science can have on policymaking. She is first author on a publication (currently under review) with a second on the way and several works in progress. \nAndrew Karas serves as Associate Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships. He brings a range of classroom and administrative experience to the role\, having most recently worked in the University of Pennsylvania’s Career Services office. Dr. Karas has also taught introductory writing at Harvard (his undergraduate alma mater) and Yale\, where he received his Ph.D. in English Language and Literature. His ongoing research examines the prominence of revision and multiple versions in modern poetry. \nLaura South is a PhD candidate studying Data Visualization at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University\, advised by Professor Michelle Borkin. Her research interests involve computer science and data science’s effects on how humans interact and share information\, as well as data science and AI’s effects on society\, especially marginalized communities\, and developing accessible technology. Before joining Northeastern\, Laura got a BS in Computer Science and Statistics from Colorado State University. \nMax von Hippel is a PhD student under the advisement of Dr. Cristina Nita-Rotaru at the Northeastern University Khoury College of Computer Sciences. Previously\, he completed a BS in pure mathematics at the University of Arizona (Honors College). He is also an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and a Davis Scholar. He loves algebra\, computation\, and security. He researches applications of formal methods to systems and network security problems. \nMargaret Wald is the Assistant Director of Graduate Education Operations for the PhD Network.  She collaborates with administrators and offices across Northeastern’s colleges and campuses to coordinate and implement university-wide initiatives from travel grants and graduate student awards to fellowship processing and recruitment efforts.  Her experiences in professional baking\, running a horse farm\, building a garden center\, developing software for higher education\, teaching at several colleges and universities\, and studying in four countries gives her a broad context for translating between theory and practice\, managing resources\, and creative programming.  Margaret has a PhD in English from Rutgers University.

SUMMARY:Webinar for Distance Teaching and Learning with MATLAB and MATLAB Grader
DESCRIPTION:MATLAB Grader is now available through Canvas at Northeastern University. MATLAB Grader allows faculty\, instructors and instructional designers to create interactive MATLAB course problems in Canvas. It provides students with instant feedback to improve engagement and learning outcomes. Instructors are also provided with valuable feedback and data on how students\, both individually and as a group\, are engaging with problems. These integrated learning analytics allow for insights on perceived problem difficulty\, extent of convergence on solution approaches and conceptual clarity on subject matter. In this session you will learn how to add MATLAB coding problems to your Canvas course. \nWe will also discuss: \n\nAccessing MATLAB and Simulink Online for anytime\, anywhere use\nLeveraging interactive content with self-paced courses\, MATLAB Apps\, and Live Scripts\n\nHere is the webex link for the webinar – https://mathworksmeeting.webex.com/mathworksmeeting/j.php?MTID=mfd3f23852d43263b4ca0187f1b0973c5\nMeeting password – MathWorks2020
