SUMMARY:Design of Polymer Electrolytes with Superionic Ion Transport
DESCRIPTION:ChE Seminar Series Presents: \nRachel A. Segalman\, PhD. \nDepartment Chair\, Chemical Engineering\, University of California\, Santa Barbara \nAbstract: \nProgress toward durable\, high-energy density lithium-ion batteries has been hindered by instabilities at electrolyte-electrode interfaces leading to poor cycling stability\, and by safety concerns associated with energy-dense lithium metal anodes. Solid polymeric electrolytes (SPEs) can help mitigate these issues\, however SPE conductivity is limited by sluggish polymer segmental dynamics. Transport through the free volume of ordered\, superionically conductive domains results in decoupling of ion motion and polymer segmental dynamics. Although crystalline domains are conventionally detrimental to ion conduction in SPEs\, we demonstrate that semicrystalline polymer electrolytes with labile ion-ion interactions and tailored ion sizes exhibit excellent lithium conductivity (1.6 mS/cm) and selectivity (t+~0.6-0.8). This allows for simultaneous optimization of typically orthogonal properties including conductivity\, Li-selectivity\, mechanics\, and processability. \nBio: \nRachel A. Segalman received her B.S. from the University of Texas at Austin and Ph.D from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Université Louis Pasteur before joining the faculty of UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories from 2004-2014.  During a portion of this time she also served as the Materials Science Division Director at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories. In 2014\, she moved to UC Santa Barbara to be the Kramer Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials and became Department Chair of Chemical Engineering in 2015. In 2018 she also became the Schlinger Distinguished Chair of Chemical Engineering and the Associate Director of the UT/UCSB/LBL EFRC: Center for Materials for Water and Energy Systems.  She is the co-editor of the Annual Reviews of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and an associate editor of ACS Macro Letters.  Segalman’s group works on controlling the structure and thermodynamics of functional polymers for energy applications including polymeric ionic liquids and semiconducting and bioinspired polymers.  Among other awards\, Segalman received the Journal of Polymer Science Innovation Award\, the Dillon Medal from the American Physical Society\, the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering\, is an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and a Camille Dreyfus Teacher Scholar. She is also a Fellow of the American Physical Society and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. \n  \nPlease contact a.ramsey@northeastern.edu for the remote link.

SUMMARY:The Space Revolution Featuring Rick Tumlinson
DESCRIPTION:We are at one of the most pivotal moments in history: The space revolution is here\, and if we leave it to Rick Tumlinson\, an entire industry in space will be here before we know it. \nOne of the world’s top space visionaries\, Tumlinson will take students on a rocket ride through his journey as a trailblazer in the fascinating field of space. \nRick Tumlinson \nA pioneer of the space revolution\, Tumlinson spent more than 30 years defining\, enabling and founding many of the pillars of the frontier movement\, including the private takeover of Russia’s Mir space station\, the X-Prize\, and the first private ticket to ISS—all aimed at achieving his end goal of discovering a method to reach any destination\, at any time. Tumlinson is also a six-time congressional witness\, whose findings have set the philosophies and legislative pillars of the commercial space industry\, referred to as NewSpace\, alongside Elon Musk\, Jeff Bezos\, and Richard Branson.

SUMMARY:Enabling Engineering Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Please come to the Enabling Engineering Showcase on Thursday\, April 28\, 11am-1pm ET in 002 Ell Hall where students will present their final design projects. \nEnabling Engineering is a Northeastern University student group that designs and builds devices to empower individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities. Our students collaborate with clients on projects that provide greater independence\, reduce medical burdens\, and increase social connectedness. We help family members\, clinicians\, and teachers care for people with disabilities. By giving students the opportunity to participate in Enabling Engineering projects\, we are training the next generation of engineers to be knowledgeable about\, and aware of\, the needs of individuals with disabilities. \n

SUMMARY:Data-Centric Networking: Theory\, Algorithms and Applications
DESCRIPTION:Professor Edmund Yeh will give an invited seminar titled “Data-Centric Networking: Theory\, Algorithms and Applications” in the Electrical Engineering Seminar Series at Harvard University John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. \nFriday\, Apr 29\, 2022\n3:00 pm to 4:15 pm | Harvard John A. Paulson\, School of Engineering and Applied Science\, SEC LL2.221 or Virtually \nIn the era of big data\, domain experts in various engineering and science fields are facing unprecedented challenges in data access\, distribution\, processing and analysis\, and in the coordinated use of limited computing\, storage and network resources.  To meet this challenge\, data-centric network design approaches such as Named Data Networking (NDN) have been proposed\, which focus on enabling end users to obtain the data they want\, rather than simply on communication between specific nodes. \nIn this talk\, we present new frameworks for the optimization of key functionalities supported by data-centric networking\, which are broadly applicable to content delivery networks\, peer-to-peer networks\, wireless heterogeneous networks\, and distributed computing networks.  The frameworks enable joint (in-network) caching\, request routing\, and congestion control\, for optimizing metrics including routing costs\, data retrieval delay\, and content-based fairness.  We meet the challenge of the underlying NP-hard problems by exploiting submodularity\, matroid structure\, DR-submodularity\, and by leveraging tools including concave relaxation\, stochastic gradient ascent\, continuous greedy and Lagrangian barrier algorithms.  We develop polynomial-time approximation algorithms with proven optimality guarantees\, with particular emphasis on adaptive and distributed implementations.  We further discuss the extension of these frameworks for jointly optimal wireless user association\, interference management and content caching in wireless heterogeneous networks\, and for jointly optimal computation scheduling\, caching and request forwarding in distributed computing networks. \nFinally\, we discuss an ongoing project which applies the optimization frameworks and algorithms to facilitate data distribution and computation in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) high-energy physics network\, one of the largest data applications in the world.
