SUMMARY:A Workshop on the NSF GRFP and Other Fellowships
DESCRIPTION:Professor Amal Ahmed will lead a workshop on how and why to apply to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program as well as other fellowship opportunities. The session will also include an interactive panel composed of faculty and staff. Fellowship award recipients (from both Khoury College and the College of Engineering) as well as a representative from the PhD Network will be on hand to share insights on the application process. \nRegister for this event at:  https://events.khoury.northeastern.edu/zRYeN1 \nPanelists: \nAmal Ahmed is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Northeastern University. She received the NSF Career award in 2015 and in 2018 she was the advisor of one NSF GRFP awardee and one who received honorable mention.  Prior to joining Northeastern\, she was an Assistant Professor at the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University (2009-2011)\, a Research Assistant Professor at the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago (2006-2009)\, and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University (2004-2006). She received her PhD from Princeton University in 2004. \nYasmeen Farra is a 3rd year Bioengineering PhD candidate in Dr. Chiara Bellini’s lab. She was awarded the NSF GRFP in 2019.  Her research examines cardiovascular disease associated with inhalation of harmful fine particles from a biomechanical perspective. Beyond the lab she is passionate about effective science communication and the positive influence science can have on policymaking. She is first author on a publication (currently under review) with a second on the way and several works in progress. \nAndrew Karas serves as Associate Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships. He brings a range of classroom and administrative experience to the role\, having most recently worked in the University of Pennsylvania’s Career Services office. SUMMARY:Webinar for Distance Teaching and Learning with MATLAB and MATLAB Grader
DESCRIPTION:MATLAB Grader is now available through Canvas at Northeastern University. MATLAB Grader allows faculty\, instructors and instructional designers to create interactive MATLAB course problems in Canvas. It provides students with instant feedback to improve engagement and learning outcomes. Instructors are also provided with valuable feedback and data on how students\, both individually and as a group\, are engaging with problems. These integrated learning analytics allow for insights on perceived problem difficulty\, extent of convergence on solution approaches and conceptual clarity on subject matter. In this session you will learn how to add MATLAB coding problems to your Canvas course. \nWe will also discuss: \n\nAccessing MATLAB and Simulink Online for anytime\, anywhere use\nLeveraging interactive content with self-paced courses\, MATLAB Apps\, and Live Scripts\n\nHere is the webex link for the webinar – https://mathworksmeeting.webex.com/mathworksmeeting/j.php?MTID=mfd3f23852d43263b4ca0187f1b0973c5\nMeeting password – MathWorks2020

SUMMARY:BioE Seminar Series Presents: Ryan Koppes
DESCRIPTION:Ryan Koppes\, Ph.D. \nAssistant Professor\, Department of Chemical Engineering\, Northeastern University\, Boston\, MA \n“Engineering Innervated Organ Systems” \n ABSTRACT:   \nMicrophysiological systems (MPS) hold the potential to provide benchtop models to investigate fundamental biology and disease while reducing the need for animal models. However\, many conventional in vitro models fail to fully capture the complex cell-cell interactions\, 3D microenvironments\, structural organization\, or vascularization of multicellular organ systems. A key criterion for replicating physiologically relevant architectures in a dish is the ability to compartmentalize discrete cell populations\, extracellular matrix compositions\, and/or mechanical properties\, without meaningfully restricting auto- and paracrine signaling. Traditionally\, compartmentalization within MPS has relied on the use of posts or microtunnels fabricated in silicon-based materials\, often requiring expensive lithographic capabilities. Further\, these methods are commonly limited to confining discrete tissues in the x-y plane. Towards overcoming these limitations\, we have developed a new ‘cut & assemble’ manufacturing technique. We have utilized these new tools to establish a number of MPS platforms to model the cardiovascular system. As part of this talk\, I will highlight the potential of this new technology and how we have applied it to model the heart and the adrenal medulla at the benchtop. Further\, through our work\, I will demonstrate how important the inclusion of neuron populations are for recapitulating organ function. \nBIOGRAPHY: \nDr. Ryan Koppes has been an Assistant Professor at Northeastern University since 2015\, where he has founded the Laboratory for Neuromodulation and Neuromuscular Repair (LNNR). Ryan received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy\, New York in 2013. His doctoral research with Dr. David Corr focused on soft musculoskeletal biomechanics and tissue engineering. In 2013\, Dr. Koppes joined the Bioelectronics Laboratory with Dr. Polina Anikeeva in Material Science and Engineering at MIT\, where he worked as a Translational Fellow on neural interface technology utilizing a multimaterial thermal drawing process and optogenetics. He was the recipient of the NIH R21 Trailblazer in 2017\, is a co-investigator on a 2019 AHA Innovative Project Award\, an NSF I-Corps\, and is a co-investigator on a 2020 NIH BRAIN Initiative R01 between Northeastern\, UCLA\, and Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Koppes also enjoys teaching Chemical Engineering Experimental Design Lab II (Unit Operations II) for senior engineers\, as well as mentoring undergraduates in the laboratory. \nPlease email Elizabeth Chesley at e.chesley@northeastern.edu for the link to the seminar.
