DESCRIPTION:MIE Seminar Series: featuring Dr. Georgia Perakis\, William F. Pounds Professor\, in Operations Management\, Operations Research & Statistics\, at MIT Sloan; Editor in Chief of the M&SOM Journal\, and a Visiting Scholar\, at Harvard Business School. This will be a joint seminar with the D’Amore-McKim School of Business. \nDr. Perakis will present a seminar titled: “AI\, Optimization and Machine Learning in OM Applications.” This seminar explores how AI\, optimization\, and machine learning work together to integrate predictive and prescriptive tasks in data‑driven decision‑making\, particularly within operations management. \nAll members of the MIE\, COE\, and DMSB communities are invited to attend. \nTuesday\, February 17\, 2026 | 358 Snell Engineering | 3:30 pm—4:30 pm \n\nAbstract: Data-driven decision-making has garnered a growing interest due to the increase in data availability in recent years. With that growth many opportunities as well as challenges arise. AI\, Optimization and Machine Learning (ML) and their synergies can play an important role to address these challenges. In fact\, nowadays\, predictive and prescriptive tasks arise together in Operations Management applications. This makes AI even more important. In this talk\, we will discuss how AI connects with optimization and ML in some of these key applications. We will highlight the importance and challenges of integrating predictive and prescriptive tasks in data-driven decision-making. If time permits\, we will also discuss the M&SOM journal and describe some of the new initiatives from this past year and the vision moving forward. \nBio: Georgia Perakis is the William F. Pounds Professor and a Professor of Operations Management\, Operations Research & Statistics at the MIT Sloan School of Management. She is also serving as co-director of the Operations Research Center. On July 1 she started her sabbatical at Harvard Business School where she is spending the year as a Visiting Scholar. \nFor the past year and a half\, she served as the John C Head III Dean (Interim) at MIT Sloan and before that\, she served as an Associate Dean for Social and Ethical Responsibility in Computing (SERC) in the Schwarzman College of Computing and MIT Sloan. Her research has received many awards and focuses on analytics/AI\, in particular\, in the intersection of optimization and machine learning with applications in pricing\, revenue management\, supply chain\, sustainability and healthcare among others. Among other recognitions\, she received the PECASE Award from the Office of the President on Science and Technology. In 2016\, she was elected as an INFORMS Fellow\, and in 2021 as Distinguished MSOM Fellow. This past Fall\, she has also received the Salzburg Medallion from Syracuse University for “outstanding leadership and innovation in the field of Supply Chain Management” and “efforts in solving complex problems and educating others.” \nPerakis has passion for supervising PhD\, masters\, and undergraduate students\, having graduated 34 PhD and 63 master’s students. She has also received numerous awards for teaching including the Graduate Student Council Teaching Award (2002)\, the Samuel M. Seegal Award (2012)\, the Jamieson Prize for excellence in Teaching (2014)\, the Teacher of the Year Award (2017) and the Outstanding Teaching Award (2024) at MIT Sloan. \nPerakis is currently the Editor in Chief of the M&SOM journal and has served on the editorial board at a number of other journals. She holds a BS in mathematics from the University of Athens as well as an MS in applied mathematics and a PhD in applied mathematics from Brown University.

Fiete\, Professor of Physics\, College of Science\, Northeastern University \nPurpose and Synopsis: Curious about quantum physics but not a physicist or physics major? This seminar series is your chance to learn the fundamentals of quantum physics\, quantum computing\, quantum sensing\, quantum cryptography\, and quantum communication in an informal atmosphere without the need to register for a class. The seminar\, open to all in the Northeastern community\, will begin from basics assuming no prior knowledge of quantum mechanics and build through key concepts relevant to quantum technologies. The first weeks of the seminar will feature tutorial lectures and then the seminar will host experts from across campus who will give accessible talks on their quantum research. The aim is to bring together the entire Northeastern community in a single setting for establishing multi-disciplinary ties across the university for all who have an interest in quantum. Students\, postdocs\, staff and faculty at all levels are welcome. He received his PhD in physics from Harvard University and did postdoctoral work at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at UC Santa Barbara. He was a Lee A. DuBridge Prize Fellow in Theoretical Physics at Caltech. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award\, the DARPA Young Faculty Award\, a DARPA Director’s Fellowship\, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)\, a Simons Fellowship in Theoretical Physics\, and a Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. SUMMARY:Chemical Engineering Spring Seminar Series: Randall Erb
DESCRIPTION:Realizing emergent properties in functional composite from directed assembly at the micro-scale \nLocation: 108 Snell Engineering Center \nAbstract: In this talk\, I will present my lab’s recent work on directing the assembly of nano- and micron- scale colloidal ceramic particles within composite materials. Through our approach\, we are able to tailor the internal microstructure of composite materials and drive meaningful changes to extrinsic properties ranging from mechanical to thermal. In the mechanical realm\, fiber orientation is a dominate factor in anisotropic property outcomes. We leverage colloidal forces ranging from shear alignment to magnetic alignment to control particle orientation. We have determined routes for applying these colloidal forces in situ to additive manufacturing. In this way\, we can construct objects that have control over complexity from the macroscale down to the micron scale. We highlight examples from bioinspired structures to theory-inspired structures to hinder crack propagation and substantially increase fracture toughness. Within the thermal realm\, we have investigated routes for controlling particle percolation pathways within thermal composites to program thermal conductivity pathways within manufactured materials. We have also pushed the limits of percolation through both volume fraction and post-sintering processes. During these studies we’ve stumbled across a new family of ceramics that are thermoformable (similar to metals and plastics). This thermoformability is reliant on the underlying microstructure which can be set into the ceramic material with new additive manufacturing processes developed in our lab. \n\nRandy Erb is a Full Professor and Associate Chair of Research of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and the Head of the DAPS Laboratory and the RF and Thermal Laboratory at Northeastern University. Randy’s research group focuses on multiscale synthesis and characterization of functional composite materials to impact diverse fields from structural composites to energy storage to thermal management. Randy’s research group has developed new forms of AM including 3D magnetic printing\, 3D mineralization printing\, and vibration-assisted\, tape-casting DLP printing. He has received a Northeastern Translation award for converting fundamental scientific breakthroughs into successful companies. Randy has co-authored ~50 journal publications\, is co-inventor on 18 pending or issued patents\, and is a co-founder of Fortify\, Boston Materials\, and Fourier.

DESCRIPTION:Benyamin Davaji\, Assistant Professor in the College of Engineering\, alongside Haiyang Yun\, Senior PhD Student\, will instruct a professional course titled “Digital Twins for Printed Electronics: How Can AI Learn FHE Printing” on February 24\, 2026\, from 1:30–4:30 p.m. MT. at FLEX 2026\, the premier international conference for Flexible and Hybrid Electronics (FHE)\, taking place in Phoenix\, Arizona. \nDigital Twin is a virtual representation of the structure\, context\, and behavior of physical systems or a process\, with a live link to a physical system serving as a key enabler for predictive and data-driven optimization. In Printed and Flexible Hybrid Electronics (FHE)\, manufacturing involves multiple interdependent variables—different printing technologies\, inks\, substrates\, and process conditions—each introducing its own complexity. In practice\, additional challenges such as equipment drift\, batch-to-batch variations\, and environmental fluctuations further impact process consistency and yield. Changing a process or transferring it between tools is often difficult\, as each setup is highly customized and sensitive to local conditions. To address these challenges\, Digital Twin frameworks connect data from design\, fabrication\, and metrology into continuously learning digital models. They enable early detection of process drifts\, virtual experimentation for process development\, and data-driven optimization that reduces time\, cost\, and waste. \nThis course introduces Digital Twin frameworks for FHE\, focusing on Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based predictive models. Participants will learn how to integrate design\, fabrication\, and metrology data into continuously learning virtual twins that detect process drifts\, enable virtual experimentation\, and optimize manufacturing. The program covers the full workflow—from image processing and virtual metrology to AI model training\, validation\, and hyperparameter tuning—using real datasets. A hands-on “Build Your Own Digital Twin” module in Google Colab will provide practical experience in training and refining models for printed electronics applications\, equipping attendees with both theoretical insight and applied skills for process optimization and performance prediction. \nFor more information\, visit the FLEX 2026 course page.

Fiete\, Professor of Physics\, College of Science\, Northeastern University \nPurpose and Synopsis: Curious about quantum physics but not a physicist or physics major? This seminar series is your chance to learn the fundamentals of quantum physics\, quantum computing\, quantum sensing\, quantum cryptography\, and quantum communication in an informal atmosphere without the need to register for a class. The seminar\, open to all in the Northeastern community\, will begin from basics assuming no prior knowledge of quantum mechanics and build through key concepts relevant to quantum technologies. The first weeks of the seminar will feature tutorial lectures and then the seminar will host experts from across campus who will give accessible talks on their quantum research. The aim is to bring together the entire Northeastern community in a single setting for establishing multi-disciplinary ties across the university for all who have an interest in quantum. Students\, postdocs\, staff and faculty at all levels are welcome. Questions and interactive discussions during the seminar are encouraged. \nTopics Covered: Entanglement\, Measurement Disturbance of Quantum Systems\, Logic Gates\, Quantum Advantage\, No Cloning Theorem\, Quantum Teleportation\, EPR Paradox\, Spin\, Hilbert Spaces\, Basic Mathematical Structure of Quantum Mechanics\, Heisenberg Uncertainty Relations. \nSpeaker/Instructor Bio: Greg is a theoretical physicist specializing in the study of exotic quantum properties of materials. He received his PhD in physics from Harvard University and did postdoctoral work at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at UC Santa Barbara. He was a Lee A. DuBridge Prize Fellow in Theoretical Physics at Caltech. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award\, the DARPA Young Faculty Award\, a DARPA Director’s Fellowship\, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)\, a Simons Fellowship in Theoretical Physics\, and a Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
