Industrial Engineering Students Publish Findings on Dual Substance Use and Treatment Success
The research conducted by Logan Kane, E’26, industrial engineering, in collaboration with Sahil Shikalgar, PhD’26, industrial engineering, in a data science workshop offered by MIE Associate Professor Md Noor E Alam on “Investigating the Effect of Secondary Cannabis Use on Treatment Discontinuation Among Individuals Undergoing Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment” was published in Substance Use & Misuse.
The study addresses an important public health policy issue by demonstrating that cannabis co-use is associated with reduced treatment success among individuals receiving treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). These findings highlight the additional complexity introduced by dual substance use and underscore the need for tailored interventions and greater clinical awareness in treatment settings. The results also provide important insights for policymakers regarding the challenges posed by cannabis use.
