Relive the 115 Years of Co-op Celebration

The year 2024 marked 115 years of cooperative education at Northeastern University, which began in the College of Engineering! To celebrate a series of events took place across the global university network, culminating in Boston during Homecoming Weekend in November. Alumni, students, employers, faculty, staff, and families gathered to reconnect, reminisce, and help propel the power of co-op for generations to come. Gregory D. Abowd, dean of the College of Engineering, hosted the events sharing co-op’s rich history and what the future holds.

COE Careers Beyond Co-op Event
The COE Careers Beyond Co-op event, hosted by the College of Engineering co-op team, connected alumni and undergraduate seniors with co-op employer partners for a day of career networking and development, panel discussions, and resume/LinkedIn refresh opportunities. Employers also toured the makerspace in the new EXP building.

University Co-op 115 Employer Luncheon
Northeastern hosted a university-wide co-op employer luncheon connecting our community of employer partners. The event featured interactive stations highlighting co-op’s past, present, and future. Jeff Stolz of RTX was the guest speaker.

College of Engineering Co-op 115 Celebration Open House
The College of Engineering hosted an open house bringing together generations of alumni, students, faculty, staff, and families. The event featured fall fest refreshments, a showcase of 18 student groups (from robotics to rockets), and new engineering teaching and research lab tours including the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things, Institute for Experiential Robotics, and Institute for NanoSystems Innovation. SPOT the robotic dog greeted the crowd. A book describing the rich history of co-op in the College of Engineering served as a special keepsake, connecting the community.

University Co-op 115 Anniversary Celebration
The university celebration included an interactive reception where attendees could connect with co-op’s history, meet students and leadership, and reminisce on their co-op journeys. Bill Howard, Trustee Emeritus, E’69, civil engineering, and former executive VP of CDM Smith, was the keynote speaker. The Nor’easters A Capella student group sang happy birthday to co-op.
