About
Thermal radiation is the most abundant form of light and among the least controlled. I design the devices that put it under electrical command, build the instruments sensitive enough to see what those devices do, and integrate both into intelligent thermal-infrared systems.
My group works across the full chain: electromagnetic modeling, nanofabrication, infrared measurement, and the algorithms that read the data out.
I am recruiting PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with a background in nanophotonics, cleanroom nanofabrication, optical or infrared instrumentation, or machine learning. Please email me with a CV and a short note on what you want to build.

I engineer thermal-infrared intelligent micro/nanosystems for sensing, imaging, and energy conversion. The band from 2 to 15 μm carries information as thermal signatures and molecular vibrational fingerprints, and energy as radiative heat transfer, yet thermal emission is incoherent, broadband, and slow. I turn these limits into design variables: nonlocal plasmonic metasurfaces built on quasi-bound states in the continuum convert radiative leakage into high-Q directional emission, and I demonstrated the first large-area, high-speed, electrically programmable pixelated thermal-infrared metasurface arrays using graphene field-effect transistors and phase-change materials. No commercial instrument resolves these signals, so I build the weak-signal measurement chain, including a microscopic lock-in FTIR spectrometer for on-chip microdevices.
At Northeastern, my lab works in three directions: thermal nanophotonics extending into non-Hermitian photonics and non-equilibrium dynamics; device-algorithm codesign with physics-informed machine learning; and applications in hyperspectral infrared imaging, near-field radiative heat transfer, and thermoradiative energy harvesting.

Xiu Liu joined the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department in August 2026 as an Assistant Professor in Oakland, California.
