SUMMARY:MathWorks Day: Seeking Humanity via Technology: How AI Can Be Used to Reduce Maternal Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Humanity via Technology: How AI Can Be Used to Reduce Maternal Mortality by Louvere Walker-Hannon \nMaternal mortality continues to be a global issue however\, studies over the past 5 years identify a growing alarming trend in the United States with respect to maternal mortality. According to several studies from the Centers for Disease Control\, “Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women”. Many of these same studies have also acknowledged that most pregnancy-related deaths are preventable and that this alarming trend continues to grow. This session will entail providing an overview of historical approaches to this issue. The emphasis of this presentation will identify how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be used to reduce maternal mortality and how AI could be used to reduce maternal mortality. \nBio: Louvere Walker-Hannon is a MathWorks application engineering senior team lead who provides technical guidance and strategic direction on AI/data science workflows for various applications. She also leads a team of application engineers. She has a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and a master’s degree in geographic information technology/remote sensing. She has presented at several STEM-related conferences on various topics and serves as an avid STEM advocate. Louvere volunteers with Black Girls CODE\, the Society of WomenEngineers (SWE)\, and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). She is also a recipient of the SWE WE Local 2022 Engaged Advocate Award and is a second-year SWE Senator. In 2023\, Louvere was highlighted as one of Boston University’s College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni and identified as one of the 10 Most Inspiring Women DrivingTechnological Progress\, in volume 11 of The Silicon Leaders magazine. \nLunch 12:00–1:00 pm\nTalk 1:00-1:30 pm\nPoster Session and Demonstrations 1:30–3:00 pm \nRegister \nMathWorks Demos: \n\n\n\nTitle\nSpeaker\n\n\nHeat Transfer for Chemical and Mechanical Engineers\nAycan Hacioglu\, Mehdi Vahab\n\n\nAI in Chemical and Mechanical Engineering\nAycan Hacioglu\, Mae Markowski\n\n\nUsing MATLAB Online with GitHub\nYann Debray\, Tharikaa Kumar\n\n\n5G Classification Neural Network\nIman Abdalla\n\n\nCryptocurrency Price Prediction using MATLAB and Python\nMatt Hannum

SUMMARY:Crossroads Moments: Entrepreneurship and Career Growth in Unpredictable Times
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Galante Engineering Business Program this Thursday\, February 9th in welcoming Eric Weiss (LinkedIn) as seminar guest speaker & workshop presenter. Eric is currently the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Radial Analytics (Website)\, a healthcare software technology company whose mission is to develop decision support solutions using Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence to target “crossroads moments” in patient care – times in a patient’s medical journey when thoughtful intervention maximally impacts the overall trajectory of their medical care. His own career has been defined by such crossroads moments – from choosing to withdraw from Medical School weeks before starting\, to moving from coast-to-coast to start a Harvard-MIT PhD program\, to dropping out of school to found his first company\, to overcoming imposter syndrome in the world of software technology. His story is an honest personal take on entrepreneurship\, success-driven culture\, and finding strength in unpredictable times through acknowledging and embracing our weaknesses. \nFor his presentation\, Eric will outline his own non-traditional career journey\, including the crossroads moments that have defined his career path. He will speak to the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship and will speak more generally to the value of managing our professional careers with an entrepreneurial spirit\, especially in unpredictable times. \nThis event will take place in Egan Research Center room 240\, Raytheon Amphitheater from 6:30-8:00pm. Attire is business formal. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:MathWorks Collaboration Day
DESCRIPTION:The MathWorks SMART Laboratory\nNortheastern University\nCollaboration Day Event \nFinancial Services and Computational Finance with MATLAB \nChris Garvin\nSenior Software\nEngineer Manager \nFinancial Services encompasses an array of application areas such as investing\, banking\, econometric modeling and risk management. Increasingly sophisticated software tools are being developed to provide financial products that give professionals a competitive advantage in this space. \nThis presentation will highlight industry segments and application areas illustrating how MathWorks applies computational finance tools and solutions to this space. You will learn about asset allocation\, sentiment analysis and algorithmic trading using MATLAB. \nThe first example will walk you through the steps to build an asset allocation strategy based on hierarchical risk parity and compare the results to a traditional mean variance methodology. Next\, a deep learning model will be used to classify the sentiments of Tweets as positive or negative. Sentiment analysis is used in investment decision making. Finally\, we will explore how a rule-based model is used to make trading decisions. \n\nBio:\nChris Garvin is a senior software engineering manager and principal software engineer leading the Computational Finance software development team. He has been at MathWorks since 1993. He has guided the development of products that serve the Financial Services and FinTech space and has been the primary developer of the Financial\, Database\, Datafeed and Trading Toolboxes and Spreadsheet Link. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Union College and an MBA certificate from Northeastern University. \n\nKeynote Address – Raytheon Amphitheater 1:30 — 2:30 pm\nPoster session and demonstrations – Raytheon Amphitheater 2:30 – 3:30 pm\nMathWorks employees\, Northeastern students and faculty will demonstrate their current work. \n\nList of demos from MathWorks that will be given from 2:30 to 3:30: \n\nText Analytics and sentiment analysis\nHierarchical risk parity\nImage Transmission and Reception Using WLAN Toolbox and One PlutoSDR\nModulation Classification with Deep Learning\nUrban Channel Link Analysis and Visualization using Ray Tracing\nReal-time ECG waveform segmentation using a deep network\nEmbedded Architecture Modeling and Targeting\n\n\nFor more information\, contact:\nMiriam Leeser\nmel@coe.neu.edu
