ABAQUS Programming is used in this paper for the analysis of CFT subjected to shear and constant axial compression. A comparison of results calculated using this model shows good agreement with test results in general. The theoretical model was used to investigate the influence of important parameters that determine the ultimate shearing strength of the composite members. The parametric studies provide information for the development of formulae to calculate the ultimate strength of CFT members subjected to shear and constant axial compression.

Experimental Study, Results, and Discussion

ABAQUS software developed and implemented by the authors in previous papers was utilized to analyze the behavior of composite members subjected to shear and constant axial compression. In order to verify the accuracy of the analysis, the proposed FEA model is used to calculate the shear strength and shear force versus deformation curves for members subjected to pure shearing or combined action of shear and constant axial compression; results were compared to experimental tests carried out in other studies with generally good agreement.

ABAQUS software was then used to test CFT members with both circular and square sections. In general, the results of tests done on both sections were quite similar. Due to this fact, the discussion and presentation of results is focused primarily on CFT members with square cross sections. P-∆ curves were generated varying several different parameters including concrete strength, steel ratio, steel yield strength, and axial load level.

τ vs. γ relations were also examined. The effect of shear-span ratio on τ vs. γ curves is presented. Other parameters, such as concrete strength, steel yield strength, and steel ratio, were tested. Analysis of shear and moment deformation with varied shear-span ratios was also conducted.

Data from the parametric studies are used to develop formulae for the calculation of the ultimate strength of the composite members subjected to shearing force and axial load.
