This is an extension of the work of Aho and Leon (1997). The experimental database created in the prior study was augmented in this study. The updated database was then used to compare and evaluate design provisions.

Analytical Study and Discussion

A detailed review of column and beam-column design according to three provisions was presented. The design provisions selected were the 1999 AISC, the 2005 AISC, and Eurocode 4.

This study augmented the database created by Aho and Leon (1997). Just as the previous study, the database was separated into columns and beam-columns of steel reinforced concrete members, circular CFTs, and rectangular CFTs. No restrictions were placed on specimens to be included in the database, with the intention that when used, appropriate tests will be selected from the database. Included in the database were material and geometric properties, as well as, peak strengths. For each test, the predicted value from the design codes was also calculated. A short summary of each set of specimens is also provided. 451 specimens were added to the existing database for a total of 1181 specimens.

For the analysis and comparison of design codes, the database was sorted and tests which were clearly not in the scope of the design codes were removed. The predicted values from the design provisions were compared to the experimentally obtained results. It was determined that all three design provisions provide good predictions of the ultimate strength of composite members, but in some instances one design code performed better than the others.
