AI in Engineering Education

The College of Engineering is reimagining engineering education to maximize student readiness for the age of AI. Building on the vision outlined in President Joseph Aoun’s book Robot Proof: Higher Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, the college offers programming to ensure engineering students can graduate with both AI literacy and practical fluency.

Literacy and fluency in AI span four critical dimensions:

  1. Understanding how AI systems work and the role of data quality and bias;
  2. Developing critical thinking skills to evaluate AI-generated insights alongside human expertise;
  3. Learning ethical frameworks for responsible AI deployment; and
  4. Exploring AI as a creative partner that augments rather than replaces human ingenuity.

This approach is woven throughout the curriculum, from introductory courses that establish AI fundamentals to advanced coursework where students apply AI tools to solve real-world engineering challenges.

Through Northeastern’s distinctive experiential learning model, engineering students don’t just learn about AI in the classroom—they apply it during co-ops with industry and government partners, in faculty-guided research projects, and through lab work.

AI in Engineering Research

The College of Engineering is home to world-leading researchers who are advancing the frontiers of AI technology and exploring its applications across diverse engineering domains.

The College of Engineering’s research portfolio spans dozens of labs doing direct research in AI: developing new AI technologies, as well as examining fundamental questions about algorithmic transparency, bias mitigation, and the societal implications of autonomous systems.   Engineering researchers are also applying AI for specialized projects: developing adaptive robotic systems that learn from their environments, using AI-powered molecular research to discover new pharmaceuticals, and applying machine learning to optimize building performance for energy efficiency and sustainability. Researchers work closely with Northeastern’s Institute for Experiential AI, creating an ecosystem where technical innovation intersects with real-world applications.
