Message from the Dean

Dear Friend,

Jerome F. Hajjar
Interim Dean of the College of Engineering
Northeastern University

Engineering has never been more important: rapid advances in technology are transforming every aspect of society, leading to new areas such as quantum, artificial intelligence, and synthetic biology.  At the same time, we are facing urgent challenges, from environmental resilience and sustainable energy to human health and food security. These challenges demand technical excellence, creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to improving lives and strengthening communities worldwide.

At Northeastern, we know that the engineered solutions to these problems are best developed through interdisciplinary approaches.  Our education and research programs are integrated with the physical, chemical, and life sciences, social sciences, health sciences, computer sciences, architecture, arts and humanities, business, and law to create impactful solutions and train the engineers of tomorrow.

As one of the largest and most robust engineering programs in the country, the College of Engineering offers degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels across seven academic units:  Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, First-Year Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and Software Engineering and Information Systems.  Core engineering studies are complemented by training in entrepreneurship, business, and leadership, and students can further specialize their studies outside of engineering through combined majors, undergraduate/graduate certificates, and accelerated masters.

Students can take advantage of a broad range of experiential education opportunities, anchored by our top-ranked cooperative education program that enables undergraduate and graduate students to apply what they learn, combining rigorous academic study with professional experience and developing the knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills needed to make both immediate and long-lasting impact.

Engineering students can learn across Northeastern’s global campus network in the United States, Canada, and Europe, with additional opportunities for study and research in other locations worldwide. Our diverse campuses create a welcoming community of scholars, educators, researchers, and innovators. As a large, private university with a long history of providing rich opportunities for all, the integrated experiences and leadership of our alumni also stretch broadly and deeply around the world.

Our faculty are true leaders in their field, fostering interdisciplinary solutions and translating complex global issues into practical solutions. The dynamic growth in the faculty over the last two decades has greatly expanded the breadth and depth of world-class research, laboratory and educational facilities, and academic programs in the College of Engineering. With a focus on use-inspired research and experiential education, we welcome deep and broad partnerships with industry, government agencies, non-profits, and philanthropic foundations.

Whether you are a prospective student, a current member of our community, an alumnus, a prospective partner, or simply interested in learning more about our work, I invite you to explore the wealth of opportunities that Northeastern’s College of Engineering offers. We look forward to welcoming you to our community and to shaping the future together.

Sincerely,

Jerome F. Hajjar, Ph.D., P.E., NAE, F.SEI, Dist.M.SSRC, Dist.M.ASCE
