Want to be our Student speaker at the Undergrad Celebration?

We are inviting a graduating senior to make a 5-minute address at the COE Graduation Celebration. All students who have registered to attend the May 4th ceremony may apply.

If you are interested in being the student speaker, please complete this form by Fri April 12th at 11:59 PM. Please note, that you will need to upload the following attachments to the form:

  1. Resume (.PDF only)
  2. Typed speech (Word file only; document must be 3-5 pages double-spaced, 12-point Times font, 1” margins)

You will also need to provide a link to a video presentation of your speech that is no longer than 5 minutes (the video should be recorded keeping in mind the formality of Commencement and the momentous occasion it is – dress and act as if you were on stage, and choose an appropriate setting)

Please take the following into consideration when creating your speech:

  • What works well: references of common experiences; future hopes for the graduating class; universal themes as experienced by undergraduate-level Northeastern students; humor
  • What to avoid: references that are personal and specific to you; a generic speech that would apply to any institution; comedic monologue; personal ideological speeches (i.e. political or moral views)
  • What to remember: the speech will be heard by family and friends of all the graduates and should be one that will be appreciated by all

Submissions will be reviewed by the Student Speaker Selection Committee.  Applicants will be informed of the results in mid-April.  All speeches and videos are submitted with the understanding that they may be posted on university-related websites and/or used in university-related publications.

Please email any questions or concerns.

Order of the Engineer

As a graduating senior, you are welcomed and encouraged to join Northeastern’s chapter of The Order of the Engineer.

The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. The Order is not a membership organization; there are never any meetings to attend or dues to pay. Instead, the Order fosters a unity of purpose and the honoring of one’s pledge lifelong.

To learn more: see the OOE official website.

The ceremony will consist of a history and ethics presentation followed by the Order of the Engineer induction ceremony, at which you will receive an OOE official ring.  The Engineer’s Ring in the United States is a stainless steel ring, worn on the fifth finger of the working hand by engineers who have accepted the Obligation of an Engineer in a Ring Ceremony.

Registration and attendance at the ceremony are required to be inducted into the Order of the Engineer. Unfortunately, due to the size of the venue and limited seating this will be first come first served and guests are not permitted. Also, this event will not be live-streamed or recorded.

If you choose to attend, you may select one of the ceremony options below.  All ceremonies will be held in the Curry Student Center Ballroom.

  • Monday, April 8, 2024, 6:30 pm-8:30 pm
  • Tuesday, April 9, 2024, 11:00 am-1:00 pm
  • Thursday, April 11, 2024, 5:30 pm-7:30 pm

All eligible graduates will receive an email with an invitation to register.

If you would like to join the Order of the Engineer, please register to attend. The deadline to register is Thursday, March 18th, 5:00 pm.

Once you register, please plan to go to the Office of the Dean, 230 Snell Engineering to have your finger sized any time between 2 pm – 5 pm during one of the following days:
