The College of Engineering announces its inaugural Young Alumni Impact Award recipients. These six leaders in their fields were carefully selected from a pool of faculty nominations. With only one awardee for each engineering discipline, this is an elite achievement. The awards ceremony and “Career Paths to Impact” fireside chat hosted by Dean Gregory Abowd is Feb. 18, 2025 in Boston and virtual.

Medication Plus Support Groups Increases Effectiveness of Opioid Use Disorder Treatment
MIE Associate Professor Muhammad Noor E Alam’s research, published in the International Journal of Medical Informatics, found that people in treatment for opioid addiction are 25% more likely to complete medication if they also attend a support group.

First Cohort of NSF NRT Student Trainees Share Value of Interdisciplinary Research
The first cohort of trainees of the NSF NRT Platforms for Exchange and Allocation of Resources grant share the value of the program’s interdisciplinary research, stipends, curriculum, seminars, and faculty mentorship. Applications are now open to be a trainee for the fall 2025 semester.

NSF CAREER Award To Advance Scalable Quantum Computing
ECE Assistant Professor Aravind Nagulu was awarded a $500,000 NSF CAREER award for “Cryogenic-CMOS and Superconducting Circuits for Scalable Quantum Systems” to address limitations in the hardware infrastructure of quantum computing.

Northeastern Nominates 6 COE Students for Prestigious Knight-Hennessy Scholarship
Alex Bender, E’20, MS’20, Matthew Coughlin, E’25, Maya De Los Santos, E’25, Jose Meza Llamosas, E’25, Dominic Pizzarella, E’25, and Daniel Sneyers Pont, E’21, MS’21, were six of eight nominated by Northeastern for the Knight-Hennessy Scholarship, which develops a community of future global leaders to address complex challenges through collaboration and innovation.

New Engineering MSIS Faculty at Northeastern’s Miami Campus
Ahmed Abdeen Hamed joined the College of Engineering in fall 2024 as an assistant teaching professor for the MS in information systems program at the Miami campus. He is an expert in biomedical research and data science.
