2018 GEM Fellowship Recipient

Thurston Brevett, E’18, electrical engineering major and mathematics minor, has been selected to receive a GEM Fellowship, which fully funds doctoral studies in science and engineering for outstanding students from underrepresented communities.

With his proven talent for engineering, Thurston plans to earn a PhD and become a leader in developing remote-sensing platforms for disaster response. He has already built a notable record of research in that field. At ALERT, a security-focused research center at Northeastern, he worked on coding, processing methods, and algorithms related to improving airport screening technologies. At MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, he participated in a project to make radars more tolerant to windfarm interference. And at Northeastern and on study-abroad in Canada, he completed a rigorous course load to expand his skillset. While serving as chairman of Northeastern’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, he has cultivated a new generation of engineers by launching an after-school robotics program for underserved youth.
