CEE Senior Wins AWWA Prize

Keith Nelson, CEE Senior on co-op at Kleinfelder/SEA, presented at the 2012 Spring Conference and Exhibition of the New England Water Works Association. His talk, “Establishing Reliable Water Supply in Rural Uganda: Designing and Implementing Culturally Appropriate Solutions,” was judged the best in the Young Members Group, propelling him to the national finals at the American Water Works Association Annual Conference and Exhibition to be held this June in Texas. Described by the judges as “engaging and entertaining, while being technically focused,” the presentation described recent efforts of Northeastern’s Engineers Without Borders student group to develop a clean, reliable water supply in west Africa. Keith described the problems facing rural Ugandans, and the challenges faced by his team in translating “western” design solutions to a very different landscape and culture.
