CEE Students Receive NCSEA Foundation Diversity in Structural Engineering Scholarship

Baiyu Chen, PhD’27, civil and environmental engineering, Shun Lei Yee, E’25, civil engineering, and Santa Flores Alvarez, MS’24, civil engineering, were named recipients of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) Foundation Diversity in Structural Engineering Scholarships. The NCSEA Foundation is a nonprofit that advances structural engineering and the goals of its parent organization is to promote innovation and people in the structural engineering profession.

Chen, who is advised by CDM Smith and University Distinguished Professor and Department Chair Jerome Hajjar, was awarded a Wood Solutions Scholarship sponsored by Think Wood, while Flores Alvarez and Lei Yee were awarded NSCEA Diversity in Structural Engineering Scholarships.

According to a statement on the NCSEA website, “The Diversity in Structural Engineering Scholarship Program was established in 2021 by the NCSEA Foundation to award funds to structural engineering students who identify as historically underrecognized students… These scholarships help remove obstacles to pursuing a career in structural engineering.”

This year, 25 recipients were named across an array of awards related to diversity, and rapid growth in opportunities since the program’s founding of 4 scholarships in 2021. The fund distributed over $70,000 in awards to winners in 2024.
