COE Donates $10,000 to BPS Science Fair in Honor of National Engineers Week
On February 6, McLeod Suites buzzed with the energy of dozens of high school students, gathered on campus for a STEM Field Trip hosted by the Michael B. Silevitch and Claire J. Duggan Center for STEM Education. For decades, the Center has welcomed young learners through its doors as part of its ongoing outreach mission—and this visit was no exception.
That day brought together 12th graders from Boston Latin and 9th graders from the O’Bryant School of Math and Science, accompanied by their educator chaperones. But the occasion held a special significance beyond the field trip itself. Also in attendance were the coordinators of the Boston Public Schools Science Fair, who came to receive a $10,000 gift from the College of Engineering’s dean—a meaningful contribution to help sustain student participation in the fair amid Boston Public Schools’ ongoing budget challenges.
The Science Fair, one of only six regional science fairs across the state, plays a vital role in nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers. COE’s generous gift was made in the spirit of National Engineers Week—a celebration the college has championed for many years, and a moment dedicated to showing pre-college students that engineering matters, and that engineering truly is for everyone.
