Gallaway Receives $104K ESS Grant

ChE Assistant Professor Josh Gallaway’s group received a one-year, $104k grant from the Energy Storage Systems (ESS) program at Sandia National Lab for “Understanding Phase Change Processes of Energy Storage Materials,” which will support a collaboration between the Gallaway group and Dr. Timothy Lambert in the Department of Materials, Devices and Energy Technologies at Sandia. The work will target the cycling mechanisms of a set of low-cost energy storage materials in both aqueous and organic electrolytes, with the goal to develop batteries for safely buffering solar and wind generation in the power grid. To this end, the Gallaway group’s expertise in battery characterization using synchrotron light will be coupled with the powerful tools at Sandia’s Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies.
