Great Honors for Prof Kaeli

ECE Professor David Kaeli is being named a Heterogeneous Systems Architecture Distinguished Professor and his NUCAR lab has been designated a HSA Academic Center of Excellence. This is attributed to recent work with AMD, Samsung and Qualcomm in the area of heterogeneous and GPU computing. "The HSA Foundation is an open foundation with broad industry support for driving the next generation in compute and innovation. Their aims are to: (from their website)

  1. Establish an industry standardization body to bring about broad industry support for heterogeneous computing via the full value chain from silicon to IP to ISV.
  2. Enable GPU computing as a first class co-processor to the CPU via architecture definition, expanding the parallel programming models via tools and libraries, and bring new innovation to OS runtimes.
  3. Provide architectural support for special-purpose hardware accelerators (e.g. rasterizers, security processors, DSPs, etc.)
  4. Bring to market strong development solutions to drive innovative, advanced content and applications.
  5. Bring about key tools, SDKs, libraries, documentation, training, and support for HSA Computing.
  6. Create programs to cultivate programming talent via HSA developer training and academic programs.

This is a very strong consortium that is driving the next generation in tablet, smartphone, and general purpose computing architecture. There are presently only 6 faculty in the world that have been afforded this designation."
