How Thermal Management & Advanced Materials Are Powering the Future

In this staff spotlight, Ogheneyunume “Yunume” Fitchorova, Principal Engineer and Director of the Materials and Devices Laboratories at the Kostas Research Institute and affiliated faculty member of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, shares her innovation journey—from identifying critical gaps in high-power defense systems to developing patented solutions in thermal management and advanced materials.

With expertise in electromagnetism and magnetic materials, Yunume leads strategic research in high-temperature components and high-power defense systems. Her inventions, including a patented passive EMI and thermal management solution, were born from real engineering challenges—and her drive to solve them.

As electronic devices become smaller and more powerful, Yunume’s work ensures they remain efficient, lightweight, and thermally stable. From improved antennas to next-generation materials and devices, her innovations are shaping technologies used across civilian and defense sectors.

Supported by Northeastern’s Center for Research Innovation (CRI), her patents, collaborations, and expanding research portfolio continue to grow—opening opportunities for students, industry partners, and researchers excited to explore impactful technological gaps.

The team is seeking collaborations with:

  • Researchers in materials science, electromagnetics, and high-power systems
  • Defense, semiconductor, and electronics companies
  • Organizations focused on antennas, thermal management, and compact device design
  • Students interested in advanced materials, device engineering, and innovation
