Northeastern University Hosts Inaugural Summer School of Vibrometry in Collaboration with Polytec — A Resounding Success!
The Institute for NanoSystems Innovation (NanoSI), in partnership with Polytec’s technical team, successfully convened the inaugural Summer School of Vibrometry on August 20–21, 2025, at Northeastern University’s Boston campus. This landmark event marked a significant step forward in advancing education and collaboration in the field of non-contact vibration metrology. Led by summer school founding chair Assistant Professor Benyamin Davaji and NanoSI director Professor Matteo Rinaldi, the two-day experience welcomed a full house of students, researchers, industry experts, and national lab professionals. The summer school was supported by the Polytec USA team through lectures, technical content, and providing hands-on training and mesa, macro, and micro scale laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV). The summer school program embarked on an immersive journey into the cutting edge of laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) and non-contact vibration metrology, with a spotlight on MEMS/NEMS, microacoustic devices, on-chip ultrasound, and structural dynamics.
Designed as an immersive educational initiative, the Summer School brought together a diverse cohort of participants—including graduate students, academic researchers, industry professionals, and representatives from national laboratories—for an intensive exploration of laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) and its applications in MEMS/NEMS, microacoustic devices, integrated on-chip ultrasound, and structural dynamics.
Key components of the program included:
- Technical lectures covering single-point, scanning, microscopic, and long-range vibrometry systems
- Live demonstrations featuring advanced vibrometry instrumentation
- Networking sessions fostering cross-sector engagement among academia, industry, and government
- Applied case studies highlighting real-world implementations in on-chip and structural domains
The Summer School featured distinguished presentations from leading experts, including Dr. Jason Gorman (NIST), Mr. Arend von der Lieth (Polytec), Professor Phillip Feng (University of Florida), Professor Osama Bilal (University of Connecticut), Professors Linbo Shao and Yizheng Zhu (Virginia Tech), and Professor Benyamin Davaji (Northeastern University). Additionally, exceptional student contributions were delivered by Daniel Ruiz-Cadalso, Celso do Cabo, and Jonathan Oliveira Luiz from Professor Cosme Furlong’s group at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
The event was offered free of charge and open to all interested participants, with registration reaching full capacity. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, underscoring the program’s effectiveness in fostering technical skill development and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Summer School of Vibrometry represents a strategic joint initiative by NanoSI and Polytec to cultivate next-generation expertise in precision metrology and to strengthen partnerships across academic, industrial, and governmental sectors.
