This past weekend, members of Northeastern SASE had the privilege of attending the 2015 SASE National Conference in Houston, TX from Oct 8-10. Through funding from the Student Activity, National SASE and the NU SASE chapter, a total of 9 members were able to attend the conference. At this conference, themed “Leadership: Confidence, Courage, Commitment,” attendees were able to take part in a series of workshops, listen to speakers and network with individuals from SASE chapters all around the country. Attendees were then able to participate in a STEM Career Fair which featured over 70+ companies recruiting for full-time and internship candidates.

The Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers, known as SASE, was founded in November 2007 to assist Asian heritage scientific and engineering professionals in achieving their full potential. SASE is dedicated to the advancement of scientists and engineers of Asian descent in education and employment. There exists over 70 chapters of SASE across the country and Northeastern SASE is one of them. Founded in the Spring of 2013 by two senior Mechanical Engineering Students, the NUSASE chapter has been growing ever since in membership, event and community-wise.

At this conference, besides the numerous workshops and networking opportunities that were presented, Northeastern SASE was recognized with the 2015 SASE Inspire Award for the Most Improved Chapter. This award is presented to the chapter that has displayed the most growth, change, and improvement over the past school year.

The chapter has significantly grown in membership and programming just in the past year. The chapter became more involved with the university’s Pan Asian American Council to set a focus on cultural issues and participate in more cultural events during the year. Besides cultural events, the chapter collaborated on more events with corporate relations in events such as Networking Night, Career Panel, Perfecting Your Pitch (Draper), Minute to Win It (Johnson & Johnson) and a College of Engineering Banquet, where the chapter joined with other NEU student group to recognize achievements.

Northeastern SASE also received recognition for their participation in SASE’s yearly National design competition known as Innoservice in which both Northeastern SASE teams – the pRUFFessionals and The K9’s placed as finalists and the pRUFFessionals placed 3rd overall. This competition serves as an opportunity for students to develop skills necessary in designing innovations that will provide a service for the community. Over the course of the fall semester and into the spring semester, teams of 2-6 SASE members tackle a prompt in which they must brainstorm a solution, prepare reports and ultimately construct a prototype for an elevator pitch and poster presentation. This year’s prompt was Develop a consumer product that compliments the habits of digitally connected consumers. Each team set out to perform research on their desired solution, presented at a poster session in the 2015 SASE Regional Conference at Boston University, and developed a prototype along with a prototype video and sales pitch video for judging. Northeastern’s teams: the pRUFFessionals and The K9’s developed the Anemoslips and Healthy Husky respectively. The Anemoslip is a portable sanitary pouch which utilized microfiber technology with a sanitary solution to effectively clean pathogens, dirt and grime off mobile devices after it was placed in the product. Healthy Husky is an online website that encourages healthy eating for college students through allowing them to access recipes through specific inputted ingredients.
