Zhu Co-Leads Battery Sustainability Efforts at MIT Workshop

Attendees gather at the third annual Battery Sustainability Workshop, co-organized by MIE Assistant Professor Juner Zhu.
MIE Assistant Professor Juner Zhu, in collaboration with MIT Professors of Chemical Engineering Martin Z. Bazant and Richard D. Braatz, organized the third annual Battery Sustainability Workshop, which was hosted this year by the MIT Industrial Liaison Program. Building on the success of the previous workshops held at Northeastern in Boston and Burlington, this event serves as the flagship initiative of the Center for Battery Sustainability (CBS).
CBS is dedicated to addressing the scientific and engineering challenges required to make batteries more sustainable. Its efforts are supported by research members Hyundai Motor Company and Shell plc, as well as participating members and collaborators SES.AI Corp., Siemens, Saint-Gobain, The Glimpse Group, Lithios, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The workshop featured three distinguished keynote speakers: Y. Shirley Meng, professor of molecular engineering at the University of Chicago and chief scientist of the Argonne Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science; Ju Li, the Tokyo Electric Power Company professor of nuclear engineering and professor of materials science and engineering at MIT; and Kang Xu, CTO & chief scientist of SES.AI Corp.
In addition, eight invited talks from industry leaders and members of federal agencies addressed a broad spectrum of topics, including supply chains, battery recycling, and next-generation manufacturing techniques. The event also included a vibrant poster session, highlighting research advancements of CBS members.
