Networked systems and optimization for immersive XR and spatial computing
Spatial Intelligence Research Group
The “Spatial Intelligence Research Group” (SINRG) is a lab focused on developing systems and algorithms related to spatial intelligence in computing. Their research areas center on the entire pipeline of Extended Reality (XR) technologies, including advanced 3D content compression, real-time capture and distribution of 4D scenes (3D plus time), and the design of open-source XR hardware.

Spring 2026 PEAK Experiences Awardees for Undergrad Research
Several COE, Bouvé, COS, DMSB, and Khoury students mentored by COE faculty are recipients of the Spring 2026 PEAK Experiences Awards from Northeastern’s Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships. This group of students from across the university will explore a wide variety of topics and questions from developing brain-computer interfaces, to analyzing air quiality data to inform future legislation, Socioeconomic Factors impact on twin infants, and more.

Advancing Technology Through Creative Solutions
Mayank Chadha, MS’25, cyber-physical systems, has always had a strong fascination with robotics and technology. He wanted to gain more experience building cyber-physical systems and a chance to work on impactful research projects that developed creative solutions for difficult problems. The cyber-physical systems master’s program was the perfect opportunity for him to learn and engage in a subject he is passionate about.

Northeastern Students Create VR Controls for NASA’s SUIT Competition
Northeastern’s SEDS club developed a mixed reality system for controlling lunar rovers as part of NASA’s SUITS competition. Collaborating with a University of Michigan team, they created VR interfaces that could enable efficient remote operation of robots for future moon settlements.

A research team led by Guodong Chen, PhD’29, computer engineering, won the Best Reproducible Paper Award at ACM MMSys 2025 for research on “TVMC: Time-Varying Mesh Compression Using Volume-Tracked Reference Meshes.”
