About
Brian Lai is an accomplished machine learning engineer and researcher based in Palo Alto, California, with a strong track record in applying cutting-edge AI technologies to solve real-world problems. Currently serving as the Head of Machine Learning at State Space, Brian has been at the forefront of developing innovative tools and solutions for machine learning applications, particularly in the field of smart contract testing and neural network modeling. His recent work includes creating a mutation testing tool for Solidity smart contract projects and using large language models (LLMs) to enhance testing accuracy and efficiency. These initiatives have positioned him as a leader in applying advanced machine learning techniques to the evolving blockchain space.
Before joining State Space in October 2021, Brian worked as a Machine Learning Engineer at Landing AI, where he played a critical role in developing and deploying tools that significantly enhanced performance and efficiency. His interactive segmentation tool for LandingLens reduced the time required to create segmentation maps by over 90%, showcasing his ability to drive transformative results in AI-driven projects.
Brian’s research background includes contributions to unsupervised video object segmentation, saliency object detection, and cross-system image segmentation improvements during his time at UCLA Vision Lab and Voxelcloud. These experiences have earned him co-authorship in several high-profile publications, reflecting his expertise in machine learning, neural networks, and image processing.
Brian holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from UCLA. His programming skills span Python, Golang, and Typescript, alongside experience in technologies such as Tensorflow, PyTorch, Docker, and Kubernetes.
