Research Overview

Microbial Ecology; Groundwater and Soil Bioremediation; Saltmarsh Ecosystem; Multi-Omics; Synthetic Microbial Community.

With the increasing anthropogenic practices and unexpected natural activities under changing climate, the environment and ecosystem are evolved with uncertainties. Thus, sustainable and adaptive strategies for environmental stewardship and ecosystem resilience are needed. Our lab is focusing on microbiomes in various systems and bioprocesses, and trying to untangle the varying microbial roles and status in the ecology underlying the changing environments. The main techniques include biphasic top-down (integrated meta-omics and bioinformatics) and bottom-up (individual microbe-based experiment and simulation) ways, to delineate the principles of microbial ecology and interaction, and  engineering validation in multi-scale tests. We will link environmental informatics with extensive approaches in synthetic biology from individual (metabolic model) to community (reconstruction) level to understand and modulate microbial behaviors. Three core questions will be answered, 1) how to quantitatively evaluate and predict environmental status by microbiomes; 2) how to utilize microbial physiological traits to enhance bioprocesses; 3) how to validate outputs across scales from laboratory to field application. Our ultimate goal is to establish engineering solutions to improve environmental sustainability, public health and ecosystem services, through providing information, leading technical innovation, and tackling real-world issues in applications.
