About
Jim O’Brien has over 25 years of experience in VoIP, real-time communications, and mobile network services engineering, development, and operations. Jim is an adjunct faculty member at Northeastern teaching classes on Real-time Communications and the Internet of Things.
Jim is also currently the Vice President of Engineering at Alianza. Alianza provides network and services solutions for communications service providers. At Alianza, Jim manages the engineering team that architects, builds and hosts services supporting CounterPath’s (a subsidiary) Bria solutions including mobile and desktop applications and services. Previous to Alianza Jim worked at the teams at CounterPath and BridgePort Networks and was responsible for building unified communications services offerings. Earlier in his career, Jim was responsible for custom wholesale and enterprise VoIP services for Level(3) and Genuity customers. He also managed a team of engineers that provided marketing, sales, and operational support.
Jim is also an Adjunct Professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, where he teaches courses on IP and Unified Communications and Cybersecurity topics in the School of Computing and Data Science.
Jim holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Jim has eight patents in the field of VoIP and real-time communications. Jim lives and works near Boston, Massachusetts where he volunteers for scouting organizations in his local community.
