Research Overview

Dr. Chen-Hsiang (Jones) Yu’s research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) focuses on mobile health, AI on mobile and readability enhancement.

In mobile health and AI on mobile domains, Dr. Yu not only investigated different health related topics, but he also applied mobile, Web and AI engineering technologies to address them. The topics include, but are not limited to, physiological signal analysis, personal and family health systems, stability control of the ankle joints, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis and analysis. Dr. Yu has proposed, designed, and implemented different IoT-based mobile health systems to address different medical issues.

In readability enhancement, Dr. Yu investigated the possibility of using customization and automation techniques to enhance web page readability for different populations. He has invented several systems for web page readability enhancement, including Froggy (a browser extension for readability enhancement for non-native English readers), the Read4Me browser (a mobile browser for continuous reading for mobile users), and FroggyGX (a browser extension to support skim reading for non-native English readers). Dr. Yu also extended the work from web pages to PDF documents, which present more restrictions in presentation format. He generalized the work to define a new framework, PDFroggy++, that supported a JSON-based user preference and configuration-like setting to customize PDF documents.

In summary, Dr. Yu has published 3 journal papers, 73 peer-review papers (49 conference papers, 3 workshop papers, 6 lightning talk papers, 15 poster papers), 2 book chapters and 1 patent.
