iGEM: International Genetically Engineered Machine

Our mission is to create an environment where students can explore synthetic biology, deepen their understanding of biological concepts, and develop hands-on skills in wet lab, computational modeling, hardware, software, coding, and technical design, all while collaboratively building innovative projects for the international iGEM competition.

Ranging from new therapeutic techniques to coming up with solutions to biological environmental issues, iGEM provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to create pioneering research and be recognized by professional biotech companies present at the Jamboree. Students spend the whole summer working on their research, computing and analyzing the resulting data, and programming a Wiki website, mastering the skills necessary for engineers in a real workplace. The participating teams are also presented with the chance to travel for the Great Jamboree, one of the most important global synthetic biology gatherings.

Joining iGEM at Northeastern offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in bioengineering while working on an innovative, student-driven synthetic biology project. Members can explore a wide range of skills including wet lab techniques, computational modeling, hardware development, software design, coding, and web design, based on their interests and strengths. Beyond the technical work, iGEM emphasizes community engagement through volunteering, outreach events, and collaborations with local organizations, helping students connect science with real-world impact. The team fosters a supportive and interdisciplinary community of passionate, driven students who learn from one another, develop strong communication and problem-solving abilities, and grow as leaders.
