Combined Major Creates World of Opportunities
Minnah Uddin, E’26, mechanical engineering and design, joined a double degree program to study two subjects she is passionate about and broaden her education and understanding of the two industries. Now completing her third co-op, she has been able to use what she has learned in the classroom to excel and succeed in any environment.

New Filter Technology Wins IEEE Outstanding Award
ECE Assistant Professor Cristian Cassella and his electrical engineering students, Onurcan Kaya, PhD’25, and Xuanyi Zhao, PhD’24, had their paper “Piezoelectric Microacoustic Metamaterial Filters” selected for the 2024 UFFC Outstanding Paper Award by the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society.

His time in the LEADERs Program helped strengthen his skills and expertise to be able to pursue his research successfully.

MIE Associate Professor Yaning Li, her former postdoc Shujing Dong (now a professor at Shanghai Polytechnic University), and recent graduate Ammar Batwa, PhD’25, (now a professor at King Abdulaziz University), published their research on “Tuning Local Anisotropy for Macroscopic Auxeticity: Design Auxetic Meta-Lamina via Systematic Finite Element Simulations and Machine Learning Approach” in Materials & Design.

Lucey is now applying all of the skills she has learned from the classroom and co-op to start her intensive thesis research on carbon dioxide hydrogenation.

Creating Impactful Medical Devices to Improve Lives
Caline Pechdimaljian, MS’25, bioengineering, started her career in pharmaceutical process engineering research and development. Her work with pharmaceutical manufacturing sparked her curiosity for looking into targeted therapeutics and medical device development. The bioengineering master’s program led her to discover her passion for working on technology to improve the health and quality of life of patients and communities.
