PhD Spotlight: Mireia Perera-González, PhD’23, Bioengineering
Mireia Perera-González’s, PhD’23, bioengineering, research has focused on developing and optimizing dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods for evaluating bioresponsive contrast agents. She has presented her work at international conferences, culminating in three first-author publications, two of which are currently under submission. Following graduation, Perera-González took a role as technical sales engineer/application scientist at Swabian Instruments USA.

PhD Spotlight: Jason Derks, PhD’22, Bioengineering
Jason Derks’ PhD’22, bioengineering, research focused on developing new methods for high throughput proteomics and using them for quantifying the proteomes of single nuclei from macrophage cells responding to bacterial antigens. He developed technology he would call “plexDIA,” which he published in Nature Biotechnology in 2022.

Abowd Receives 10-Year UbiComp Impact Award
Gregory D. Abowd, dean of the College of Engineering and professor of ECE, was a recipient of the UbiComp 2023 10-Year Impact Award for his paper, “Instant Inkjet Circuits: Lab-based Inkjet Printing to Support Rapid Prototyping of UbiComp Devices,” that was published in 2013. The award is given to papers published at the conference 10 years ago that have been deemed the most impactful over time.

PhD Spotlight: Guillem Reus-Muns, PhD’23, Computer Engineering
Guillem Reus-Muns, PhD’23, computer engineering, led a NSF project on applied machine learning for wireless, and his work resulted in several foundational discoveries that will shape next-generation wireless standards. He has published in IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Networks, IEEE Transactions on Networking, and IEEE Sensors. He published a total of 14 peer-reviewed research papers and submitted two patents. Following graduation, Reus-Muns joined Apple, as a wireless systems engineer.

PhD Spotlight: Caterina Bartomeu Garcia, PhD’22, Chemical Engineering
Caterina Bartomeu Garcia, PhD’22, chemical engineering, focused her research on the development of novel drug delivery systems for the treatment of brain infections such as bacterial meningitis. She had a publication in the International Journal of Nanomedicine, and five peer-review publications. She is now a scientist at Repertoire Immune Medicines.

PhD Spotlight: Sarah Sanchez, PhD’23, Civil and Environmental Engineering
Sarah Sanchez earned her BS in civil engineering, MS in engineering and public policy, and PhD in civil and environmental engineering. She was awarded the Strategic Advancement of Rising Scholars (STARS) Fellowship funded by the National Science Foundation for her PhD studies.

Ostadabbas Receives Sony Faculty Innovation Award
ECE Associate Professor Sarah Ostadabbas received the Sony Faculty Innovation Award for her project titled “Live Stream Temporally Embedded 3D Human Body Pose and Shape Estimation.” She is the first at Northeastern to receive this prestigious award.
