Two ChE PhD Students Win Big at Competition
Qudus Rafiu, PhD’28, and Lawrence Ajayi, PhD’27, chemical engineering, attended the same undergraduate university but did not meet until they happened to join the same lab during Lawrence’s master’s at Ohio University. Since then, they have become close friends and have worked together in research and studies. Recently, their teamwork helped them win the second-place prize in the NPG x Liberty Mutual Business Case Competition.

Led by Emma Ortiz, E’26, mechanical engineering, a team of Northeastern University students won first place in a U.S. Department of Energy competition for their design of a theoretical geothermal energy system beneath the campus’s Centennial Common.

ECE PhD Student Receives Best Paper Award at IEEE RoboticCC 2025
Sarvesh Prajapati. MS’24, robotics and PhD’30, computer engineering, received the Best Paper Award for his work on “Spectral Signature Mapping from RGB Imagery for Terrain-Aware Navigation” at the 9th IEEE International Conference on Robotic Computing and Communications (RoboticCC 2025).

Northeastern Duo Wins First Place at Disney Industrial Engineering Case Competition
Industrial engineering students Aaron Wang, E’27, and Kristina Carandang, E’27, won first place at The Walt Disney Company’s third annual Disney Industrial Engineering Case Competition. Their achievement marks the first time a Northeastern team has taken the top spot in this national event.

Chemical engineering students Sydnie Bayles, E’27, and Marissa Darcangelo, E’26, were awarded the first-place trophy in the Education and Other category at the AIChE National Student Conference for their poster on “Drawn to Chemical Engineering – Comics As a Visual Learning Tool for First-Year Chemical Engineering Students.”

Northeastern Nominates 6 COE Students for Prestigious Knight-Hennessy Scholarship
Druhi Bhargava, E’24, computer engineering; Amanda Ferrante, E’26, bioengineering and biochemistry; Kevin Giordano, E’26, mechanical engineering and physics; Victoria Robbins, E’22, chemical engineering; Nishita Roy, E’26, bioengineering, and Zhenming Yang, E’26, electrical and computer engineering were were six of nine nominated by Northeastern for the Knight-Hennessy Scholarship, which develops a community of future global leaders to address complex challenges through collaboration and innovation.
