Civil engineering students Catherine Yates and Meilin Garfinkel won Spring 2023 scholarships from their co-op employer DN Tanks, a company specializing in engineering concrete tanks for a wide variety of water, wastewater, fuel, and other infrastructure and industrial purposes.

DN Tanks, a company specializing in engineering concrete tanks for a wide variety of water, wastewater, fuel, and other infrastructure and industrial purposes, recently awarded Spring 2023 scholarships for their semi-yearly awards program. The scholarships highlights students “who excel in their work at DN Tanks as either a cooperative education student or intern student.” This year, Northeastern Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering students Catherine Yates and Meilin Garfinkel were chosen as the winner.

Catherine Yates, a junior pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering, was lauded by DN Tanks for her impressive work as a student on their very first co-op, including high levels of organization, communication, and time management skills. She was also praised for her positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and dependability. “She produced many important material takeoffs, tank information packages and shoring drawings, including some for tall and complex tanks such as Cut Bank, MT, Houston, TX (WHCRWA) and Fort Pierre, SD,” DN Tanks said in a statement announcing the award.

Meilin Garfinkel, E’25, who is also pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering, worked with the Construction department at DN Tanks, which highlighted her professionalism, communication skills, and great attitude when awarding her the scholarship. While working with the team, she made several visits to a Fitchburg, MA project where she had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the many innovative tank building techniques being put in place. “She has excelled in communication and collaboration with all of the members of the Construction department, hunting down the most aggressive pricing for various subcontractors and maintaining under budget cost performances on the vast majority of the projects she contributed to,” DN Tanks wrote.
