ChemE Celebrates at Capstone Design Presentations and Awards Banquet

On April 20, faculty, staff, and students came together to celebrate the largest undergraduate class ever, at 93 students. During the day, attendees watched the innovative student group presentations from the course called Process Design (CHME 4703). With a combination of entrepreneurship, engineering, and public speaking, alumni often mention that Capstone presentations are their favorite memory of Northeastern. The Department of Chemical Engineering is grateful for the support of the IAB members, faculty, research institutions, and alumni who volunteered their time and served as mentors to the student teams.

During the evening, the Chemical Engineering Awards Banquet was held in the elegant Alumni Center, located on the sixth floor of 716 Columbus Avenue. With awards for undergraduate and graduate students (as well as faculty and alumni), it was an exciting evening. Distinguished guests Mr. Michael Morris and Dr. Richard H. Sioui presented the “Nabil Morris Award” and “Dr. R.H. Sioui Award for Excellence in Teaching”, respectively. Gary Broberg, alumnus and IAB member kindly donated a delicious Northeastern theme cake! Thomas Webster, Professor and Department Chair, Chemical Engineering and Art Zafiropoulo Chair in Engineering, started the evening with a warm welcome and celebrated the recent accomplishments in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

As Professor Ebong, Professor Goluch, Professor Landherr, and Dr. Pfluger presented over 150 national, university, and departmental awards, it became clear that the undergraduate and graduate class was very talented and hard working. Classmates cheered on their peers and took photos together. The most anticipated moment of the evening was the traditional “Pie-In-The-Face” activity, which had been predetermined at Chemical Engineering Day months before. Professor Landherr threw a pie at PhD student Hunter Sismaet while the crowd watched on the edge of their seats. At the end of the night, students, faculty, alumni, and staff ate cake and congratulated the award winners. Chemical Engineering truly is a special community.
