COE Alum Receives Prestigious Fellowship

Moira McSpadden, ME’97, is among 80 new Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellows—considered the “Rhodes Scholarship” of teaching, it is designed to foster innovation in teaching and the education of teachers.

McSpadden will receive a $40,000 stipend and a full tuition scholarship over the course of two years. She will also be enrolled in a master’s degree program that gives intensive, clinical preparation for math and science teaching in the urban and rural high schools most in need of strong educators.

She anticipates the fellowship will be invaluable to her, her peers and especially to the students. “I am most looking forward to being out in the classroom and being able to make a difference in the lives of kids living in rural school districts,” says McSpadden. “Receiving the Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellowship means that I will have the means to best prepare to become a world-class teacher. This opportunity not only the furthers my educational training, but offers me the mentoring and support of the professors and staff at the Woodrow Wilson Foundation.”

Now a resident of Garland, Texas, McSpadden holds two bachelor’s degrees in microelectronics engineering technology from Arizona State University and an M.S. in Information Systems from the College of Engineering at Northeastern University. Moira has worked as a business analyst in the areas of process engineering and quality assurance as well as in the aerospace, insurance and consulting industries. Moira currently resides in Garland, Texas where she will continue to pursue her passion of travel, quilting, and enhancing education in rural school districts.
