Energy Systems Spotlight

Divyanshu Kamboj, Lumi-Solair, MSES 2013—In August of 2013, recent graduate Divyanshu Kamboj completed his co-op journey with Lumi•Solair LLC, a New York based company that manufactures off-grid renewable energy and lighting products. During his co-op experience, Kamboj was put in charge for the introduction of Lumi•Solair’s off-grid streetlight systems and initiated the introduction to Robert Phocas, the City of Charlotte’s Energy & Sustainability Manager, via Dr. Cheryl Richards, the Regional Dean & CEO at Northeastern Charlotte campus. The initiative included the installation of two solar powered “Swan” streetlight units at Charlotte’s international airport long-term parking, to showcase the benefits of renewable energy lighting technology. Read more about this initiative.

As a result of his co-op performance, Kamboj transitioned into a permanent role with Lumi•Solair, leading an effort on multiple Solar Telecom application projects in India. “In India and many other parts of the world, the electrical grid is not available at all sites or is not sufficiently reliable to power telecom towers 24 hours a day. Currently, many of these sites run on diesel generators creating a number of problems including the exorbitant cost of fuel, maintenance, labor and a reduction in site reliability. One attractive alternative to diesel generators is the use of solar power. This offers advantages such as quiet operation, no risk of diesel theft and minimal maintenance. Lumi•Solair is able to offer such a solution using the state of the art energy management technologies that it has developed for the street lighting projects,” Kamboj explains.

The success of Kamboj’s company is growing. Recently, Lumi•Solair won a 2013 U.S. EPA Environmental Quality Award and was recipient of the 2013 U.S. Department of Commerce’s Export Achievement Award Recipient as indicator for the recognition of their efforts in U.S. renewable energy technology to tackle one of the world’s most difficult infrastructure problems.
