Ian McDonald awarded Judge’s Choice in "Magnetism as Art" Showcase

Interdisciplinary PhD student Ian J McDonald of the Nanomagnetism Group, led by ChE/MIE Professor Laura H. Lewis, won the Judge’s Choice in the “Magnetism as Art” Showcase at the Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials held this year in Pittsburgh, PA. His image, entitled “Flux“, shows the complex magnetic domain pattern of a new alloy synthesized in the Nanomagnetism lab that resembles an electrically charged landscape. The image (above) was taken using Magnetic Force Microscopy, a technique that allows for imaging of magnetic domain structures.

ChE PhD candidate Brian Lejeune, also of Professor Lewis’ Nanomagnetism Group, was a recognized as a finalist in this showcase competition. His image (right) is entitled Labyrinth.
