Peace Corps Volunteer Usman Mohammed Speaks to COE Enabling Engineering Group
On February 24th, Northeastern alum and returned Peace Corps Volunteer Usman Mohammed spoke to the College of Engineering's Enabling Engineering group about his experiences using information technology during his Peace Corps service in Ethiopia.
The fifteen student members of the group and faculty advisor Waleed Meleis regularly participate in seminars with experts on disabilities and use their knowledge to work with end users and caregivers to develop and present design proposals to improve the lives of those with disabilities.
With a mission statement of using "engineering technologies to build low-cost devices that improve the lives of the elderly and individuals with physical or cognitive disabilities," the group is actively working to "help family members and nursing care professionals care for people with special needs" while simultaneously empowering "affected individuals by giving them greater independence, reducing medical errors, and increasing social connectedness, at minimal cost."
