Prof. Bernal Researches New Energy Dissipation Strategies for Buildings

Professor Dionisio Bernal has received a $161,580 grant from the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) from the National Science Foundation to estimate damping in buildings during earthquakes. This project takes a comprehensive look at the issue of damping estimation for seismic response prediction and makes use of the NEES Database to guide the analytical examinations. The anticipated contributions include recommendations for selecting modal damping ratios, a recommended protocol for assessing damping in existing structures. This award includes an educational outreach initiative that integrates the research with education for undergraduate and high school students. Congratulations to Prof. Bernal!
