Prof. Gouldstone is Recipient of Best Paper Award

MIE Professor Andrew Gouldstone was the recipient of the Journal of Thermal Spray Technology Best Paper Award at the International Thermal Spray Conference for his paper "On the Role of Bubbles in Metallic Splat Nanopores and Adhesion".  The work shows that the first hundred nanoseconds of liquid droplet impact strongly effects surface adhesion.

Professor Gouldstone received both his B.S. and Ph.D. from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) at MIT, in 1996 and 2001, respectively. He also worked in nanoindentation experiments, and experimental atomic simulations using bubble rafts. As of January 2008, he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University. His current interests include Mechanics of Heterogeneous Systems, Industrially Relevant Fundamental Mechanics of Thermal Sprayed Coatings, Respiratory (Lung) Mechanics and of course, Indentation Across Size Scales and Disciplines, the topic of his 2005 NSF CAREER Award. He is also developing programs in mechanics and detection of child abuse, and educational outreach such as Bringing Education and Lifelong Learning to Adults (BELLA).

The Journal of Thermal Spray Technology publishes contributions on all aspects — fundamental and practical — of thermal spray science including processes, feedstock manufacture, testing, and characterization. As a leading forum on thermal spray technology, its mission is to synergize the rapidly advancing thermal spray industry and related industries by presenting research and development efforts leading to advances in implementable engineering applications of the technology.

The Journal presents critically reviewed scientific papers and engineering articles, combining the best of new research with the latest applications and problem solving.
