Prof. Laura H. Lewis Selected for the 2018 Mechanical Engineering Academy of Distinguished Alumni Honorees at UT – Austin

The University of Texas at Austin has selected ChE/MIE Professor Laura Lewis as one of the “2018 Mechanical Engineering Academy of Distinguished Alumni Honorees”. Professor Lewis was awarded the title “Distinguished Mechanical Engineer” by virtue of her superior professional achievement, community service, and service to the University; she is recognized as a role model for all to follow.

Professor Lewis earned her doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science concentration, from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993. Since earning her doctorate, Dr. Lewis has been a strong asset to the science and technology community by supporting outreach, diversity and literacy efforts. International universities and professional organizations have recognized Professor Lewis’ passion, hard work and commitment to service; and in return, her achievements are growing steadily.

Dr. Lewis’ work is distinguished by its “focus on revealing subtle but overarching principles of Nature that may be then exploited to advance the performance of large classes of materials, not just for a single targeted application”. In addition, Dr. Lewis has presented over 100 invited presentations at national and international venues and has mentored over 80 students to award-winning success (including advising two American Physical Society (APS) student dissertation award winners). Professor Lewis serves on a number of national and international advisory boards and holds many leadership positions at universities and professional organizations. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE, the Conference Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics as well as the Chair of the IEEE Magnetics Society Technical Committee. Professor Lewis’s achievements are “recognized by depth, creativity and detail to improve functionality in a diversity of engineering systems.” Just a few of her accomplishments include the DOE Outstanding Mentor Award (1999, 2002), the Northeastern University Excellence in Research and Creative Activity Award (2014), and she was appointed a Northeastern University Distinguished Professor in 2018.

While she is currently conducting research in Madrid, Spain, under the auspices of a Fulbright Fellowship, the NU College of Engineering would like to congratulate Professor Lewis on her selection for the “2018 Mechanical Engineering Academy of Distinguished Alumni Honorees” at the University of Texas at Austin.
