The Edible Bridge Challenge

Professor Variawa's GE1110 course got creative as they tested out their engineering skills by building bridges — out of food!  Students formed teams for this special project and put their heads together to envision how our everyday food options can be turned into an engineering design. To make things even more interesting, each team chose a different country to represent which reflected in the materials they used for their edible bridge.  The students' bridge designs were required to implement all five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy products.  Once the bridges were designed, the teams tested out their handiwork to see how their bridges fared against the rest.  It was a successful day for some teams whose bridges held up against the weight of the cargo; however, other teams watched with devastation as their bridges collapsed under the cargo's weight.
