2024 Goldwater Scholarship Nominees
Maya De Los Santos, electrical and computer engineering, Kaitlyn Ramesh, bioengineering, and Madeline Szoo, chemical engineering and biochemistry, were nominated for the 2024 Barry Goldwater Scholarship—a highly competitive, merit-based award for outstanding students in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering who are interested in pursuing careers in research.

Enabling Engineering Makes Play Accessible
Paired with external clients, students in Northeastern University’s Enabling Engineering class developed apps and devices this semester to empower individuals with disabilities to participate in activities they enjoy. Examples include a virtual reality app that helps people practice their public speaking skills, and an accessible, switch-activated beanbag launcher for cornhole.

Electrical Engineer’s Path From the Dominican Republic to Northeastern University
Cesar Manuel De Oleo, E’26, electrical engineering, participated in the Undergraduate Program for Leaders In Future Transformation (UPLIFT) program. As a first-year student, he participated in research on parallel computing. He has learned buildup of C programming, algorithms, libraries, and programming in CUDA and help his research.

PhD Spotlight: Sarah Sanchez, PhD’23, Civil and Environmental Engineering
Sarah Sanchez earned her BS, in civil engineering, MS in engineering and public policy, and PhD in civil and environmental engineering. She was awarded the Strategic Advancement of Rising Scholars (STARS) Fellowship funded by the National Science Foundation for her PhD studies.

Northeastern and Partner Universities Awarded Prestigious NSF Research Traineeship to Study Impacts of Technology Platforms
MIE Distinguished Professor Ozlem Ergun was awarded a $3M NSF grant to develop a “national research traineeship” (NRT) program called “Platforms for Exchange and Allocation of Resources (PEAR),” which will study the impact of digital platforms on society.
