‘Emerging Investigators’ are Studying Flow of Soft Materials through Tiny Spaces

ChE Assistant Professor Sara Hashmi and Barrett Smith, PhD’24, chemical engineering, were recognized as part of the “Emerging Investigators” series of the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Soft Matter. Smith was first author of their paper, “In Situ Polymer Gelation in Confined Flow Controls Intermittent Dynamics,” which uncovers novel flow behavior in crosslinking biopolymers.

Hashmi Uses Spark Fund Award for Revolutionary Research

ChE Assistant Professor Sara Hashmi received a Spark Fund Award from the Center of Research Innovation at Northeastern for her research to advance microfluidic tensiometry/elastometry technology, which promises to revolutionize the screening and optimization of elastic particles and fluid droplets.

Announcing Summer 2023 PEAK Experiences Awardees

Several engineering students and science students mentored by COE faculty are recipients of Northeastern’s Summer 2023 PEAK Experiences Awards. They will be pursuing a diverse set of projects, including a study of a pathogen that haunts hospitals, an examination of segregationist rhetoric in Boston newspapers, and an analysis of creativity in music.

NSF CAREER Award for Examining Flow of Polymer Gels in Confined Spaces

ChE Assistant Professor Sara Hashmi was awarded a $550,000 NSF CAREER award for “in situ Polymer Gelation in Confined Flows” to examine how polymer gels flow through tight spaces to better predict clogging behavior such as blood flow through a vessel.
