ECE Associate Professor Raymond Fu and Xue Han from BU were awarded a $30K Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering Grant for Advancement of Interdisciplinary Research. The grant will support the team’s work to “derive principles of brain neural network architecture using novel machine learning algorithms” by combining biological knowledge and novel machine learning techniques to advance understanding of the brain’s neural networks. Specifically, Fu and Han have devised a system that can record thousands of individual neurons in living mice brains at millisecond scale. Using machine learning techniques and taking spatiotemporal information into account, Fu and Han hope to provide a more meaningful explanation for dynamic neuron activities.
