The Synergetic Media Learning Lab, or SmileLab, run by Professor Yun Raymond Fu, is the recipient of two recent awards, one from an international competition and another for an IEEE best paper.

The first award is from the 2017 International Conference on Computer Vision MS-Celeb-1M Grand Challenge. According to the organizers of the event, “The challenge is to recognize one million celebrities from their face images and identify them by linking to the unique entity keys in a knowledge base. This task introduces very large scale face recognition with disambiguation.” Professor Fu and PhD Student Yue Wu took first in Track 2: Low-shot Learning (without external data) category.

The SmileLab also received the best paper award from the 2016-2017 IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing. The paper, titled “Analysis of EEG Signals and Facial Expressions for Continuous Emotion Detection,” was authored by M. Soleymani, S. Asghari-Esfeden, Y. Fu, and M. Pantic.
